Story Summary
When Emilie Todd Helm lost her husband, a Confederate General, at the battle of Chickamauga, she and her six year old daughter were invited to the White House by her half-sister Mary Todd Lincoln. This gentle story is told from the perspective of ten year old Tad Lincoln who is charged with entertaining his grieving young cousin without mention of their families' respective Union and Confederate sympathies. Filled with love and humor, it is a small joyous event in any otherwise horrifying period of American history.
