Old Shaggysides

Old Shaggysides is a bull buffalo, old and lame and left by a herd that migrated south never to return. Pushed by hunger, he overcomes his fear of man and starts eating hay dropped by a rancher while feeding his cattle. The rancher thinks him a nuisance until he saves the herd from wolves and in time becomes the family pet.
