Cymbril, a young slave with a voice like a nightingale, is held captive on the Thunder Rake, a gargantuan land roving merchant ship, where she performs for townfolk while the ship's captain, Rombol, trades goods. She holds little hope of escape until Rombol buys another slave, a Fey child, Loric, who has the ability to help guide the ship at night. When Loric communicates with Cymbril through thought alone, she finds out that she is half Fey herself, and together they conspire to escape to Loric's village, Gorhyv Glyn in the land of the Sidhe ... but the best laid plans ...
