Young Billy had run away from the orphanage and hooked up with Doc Noble, a snake-oil salesman. But after traveling with Doc for some time, he overheard Doc say he had to contact the orphanage. Fearing that Doc was going to return him, Billy planned to run away again, not knowing that what Doc really wanted was to adopt him.
