Story Summary
Luckily for Elizabeth Blackwell, she had grown up with a father that educated his daughters to the same standards as his sons. Later, encouraged by a dying friend's exhortation that she would have had less pain and embarrassment if she were cared for by a woman doctor, Elizabeth became the first woman to apply to medical school and graduating in 1849 at the top of her class.
