Just before Katie's Grandmother died, Katie had drawn her picture on a piece of old wrapping paper, which Katie's art teacher called a portrait and which won first prize in the school art contest. Katie had signed the picture with her full name, Katie Blue Thunder, and she knew that her talent was her ticket out of the poverty of the Crazy Horse Coulee.
