Story Summary

When Jinkichi the woodcutter grew ill, his daughter Yoshiko went to the forest to cut wood to sell. What she found were hundreds of Cranes trapped in the winter ice. After Yoshiko enlisted the help of the villagers to save them, Yoshiko returned home to find her father recovered, the rice bins full and a beautiful white kimono embroidered with cranes. Each year after that the villagers brought rice to the cranes for the promise of good fortune, happiness and long life to all who cared for them.
